Whatnot show thumbnail checklist
Pass or fail one Whatnot thumbnail at 1080 x 1920: honest product, readable type, and a match to the live room.
On this page
A Whatnot show thumbnail checklist is pass or fail on one file before you schedule. The thumb is the ad. If it names a different product than the table, or the type dies at the edge, the rest of the kit does not matter yet. Fix the file. Do not add a second concept.
This is the image. How that image must agree with the title and the live frame is listings that match the live room. Canvas rules for the show itself: Whatnot overlay size.
| Check | Pass | Fail |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 1080 x 1920 | A horizontal export cropped until the logo is a sliver |
| Product | The thing you will actually show | Last show's photo, this show's title |
| Type | Readable in a phone scroll, not only full screen | A paragraph, or words kissing the extreme edges |
| Name | Your show name, same as live | A template watermark or another seller's layout |
| Edges | Important words in the middle band | The only readable word parked where crops happen |
Fail a row and export again. A clever fail is still a fail.
Build the canvas before the concept
1080 x 1920, same vertical idea as the live canvas. A 16:9 leftover will be crushed. Put the product and the format where a tight crop still keeps them. The middle of the frame survives more contexts than the corners.
Skip a photoshoot montage. One product truth beats five floating cards nobody can name. If you need five products, you are making a collage, not a thumb. Pick the main one.
Words a stranger can read
Format plus product. 'PYT' means nothing if the product line is missing and the buyer is new. Your nickname can stay if the product is also there. Test by shrinking the image until it is a strip in a list. If you only recognize it because you made it, it fails.
Do not promise a hit, a grade, or a player you do not have in the show. The thumb is a claim. Chat will quote it back when the rip does not match.
Same family as the live room
Colors and name should match the overlay you will actually run. A thumb from a template pack and a live room from a different pack feels like a door into the wrong store. You do not need the thumb to be a screenshot of the overlay. You need them to be obvious relatives.
Export, then look at it the way a buyer will
- Set the file to 1080 x 1920. Do not upscale a story crop and hope.
- Put product and format in the middle band.
- Send it to your phone. Scroll past it. Stop only if you can say the show.
- Put it next to the title. Read both aloud.
- If you reuse a file, change the product line before you change the glow.
Who should not hire a thumbnail system: a seller making one thumb for one test show. Canva is enough. Who should: a schedule of shows that all look identical, or none of them match the live name. We do not publish free thumb packs.
Type that fails only when it is small
Full-screen on your monitor is a bad test. The thumb is a tile in a list. If the format word disappears and only the glow remains, move the words into the middle and cut an effect before you cut the product name.
Lower the phone brightness. Thin light type on a bright card photo dies. Put the words on a flat plate. Do not add a second headline to compensate.
Four thumbs that fail before the concept matters
Build the canvas first. 1080 x 1920, the same vertical idea as the live frame. Then put tonight's product and the format in type a stranger can read at tile size. The concept is allowed to be boring. A thumb that only works full-screen on your monitor is a poster, and Whatnot will not show it as a poster.
Export, then look at it in a list, not full-screen. Drop the phone brightness. If the format word disappears and only a glow remains, move the words onto a flat plate and cut the effect. Do not add a second headline to compensate. One product. If you need five products in the frame, you are making a collage, and nobody can name the show.
| Thumb | What a buyer reads | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Last week's hero pull, this week's title | The card in the picture, not the title | Remake it with tonight's product |
| Light type on a bright card | A glow, and no words | Flat plate behind the words. Lower the effects. |
| Five products and a slogan | Nothing they can repeat | One product. Format in the title if the thumb is full. |
| A horizontal file you crop into the tile | A logo sliver and no product | Rebuild at 1080 x 1920. Do not crop a wide poster. |
Reuse the family, not the file. Same name, same colors, new product facts. A thumb can be the same layout every night and still be honest, as long as the words change when the table changes. The live room has to agree with it. A clean thumb that opens into a different category is the mismatch, and no amount of type weight fixes the click.
Thumbs do not fix a bad show. They get the right people into the room. If the product is thin, say so in the title or do not schedule it. An honest tile that fills slower is cheaper than a crowded open you have to apologize through.
FAQ
What size is a Whatnot show thumbnail?
Make it 1080 x 1920. That matches the vertical live canvas sellers use. Confirm any uploader limit in the app when you schedule, and do not start from a horizontal file.
What should the thumbnail say?
Your name, the format, and the product. Not a slogan in place of the product.
Can I reuse last week's thumbnail?
Only if the product and format are the same. A new product on an old picture is a mismatch.
Should the thumbnail include my overlay?
It should look related. It does not need to be a full scene screenshot. A screenshot of a cluttered live view is often a worse thumb than a simple plate.
Do thumbnails fix a bad show?
They get the right people in. If the room then shows a different product, the thumb did harm. Make it true, then make it clear.
Save the export next to the show date in the file name. 'thumb-final' will get attached to the wrong listing the next time you are in a hurry. The checklist is useless if the pass file is not the file you upload. After you upload, open the scheduled show on your phone and look at the tile, not at the file on your desktop. The tile is the thumbnail buyers get.
Upload it, then force-quit nothing and just look at the scheduled show as a buyer would. The export on your desktop can pass while the tile Whatnot displays is an older upload. If those two files differ, the checklist has not been run on the real thumbnail yet.
Send the current thumb and the show link through Free Audit, or drop the file in Discord. Frame system: Whatnot overlays.
