What a phone-only Whatnot show can actually use
A phone show can have an honest thumb, a true title, and the product in frame. It cannot run a board, a hit plate, or a layered kit.

A phone-only Whatnot show can use three things: a thumbnail, a title, and the product in your hand. That is the kit. Boards, sold plates, and a layered frame need OBS, because the Whatnot app will not run those scenes for you. If you are live from the phone, buying those files is how you pay for a folder you cannot put on the show.
This is not the OBS click-path. Connect steps and stream keys stay on Whatnot's OBS help. It is also not the thumbnail craft post. One thumb, in detail: Whatnot show thumbnail checklist. Here: what the phone can hold, and the night that stops being true.
| Piece | The phone can do it | OBS is the job |
|---|---|---|
| Thumb at 1080 x 1920 | Yes. You set it on the show before you go live. | No |
| Title, and a pin in chat | Yes. You type them. They are the only list you have. | No |
| The product on camera | Yes. That is the show. | No |
| A board, a sold plate, a hit hold | No. The app will not cycle your scenes. | Yes |
| A second host's name on screen | No. You can say the name. You cannot park a plate. | Yes |
The thumb is the whole design
On a phone show the thumbnail is not a preview of a kit. It is the kit. Build it at 1080 x 1920. Put tonight's product on it, and your name, in type that still reads when the tile is small. One product. If you need five items in the frame, you are making a collage, and a stranger cannot name the show.
Skip a mock overlay on the thumb. A picture of a board you will not have on camera teaches people to look for a grid that never arrives. The thumb should look like the shot they are about to join: your name, the item, the format in a few words. Last month's hero pull on this month's title is still a lie when you have no other graphic to correct it.
You can make that file in Canva. Pelican does not ship a template for it. If it reads on your phone next to the title, stop. Do not order a scene pack to make one tile feel more serious.
The title does the job a board would do
You have no spot list on screen. The title has to say the product and the format before anyone joins. 'Heat night' is not a product. 'One jersey, auction, size in chat' is. If you are ripping singles, say singles. If the table is one item at a time, say that. People who came for a team grid will ask where their spot is, and you will spend the open explaining a picture you published.
Put the exclusion in the title or the pin before the first bid. 'No autos.' 'This pair only.' You cannot point at a cell. Chat is the record. A pin from yesterday's show is how the wrong promise survives. Replace it when you replace the title.
If you sell spots, you are already past a phone show. A list people buy from has to change when a spot sells. The app will not mark that list. Talking faster will not either. Stop taking team bids until the screen can show open and taken. That screen is OBS, and the file is a board. Format pictures: breaks, singles, and surprise sets.
What stays in the frame
The frame is the phone camera. You, the item, and the bid UI Whatnot already draws. Leave the price alone. A second price on a paper sign goes stale the moment the bid moves, and you cannot hotkey it off. Hold the item where the camera sees the detail you are selling: the slab name, the size tag, the pair. If you are twisting it to dodge your own fingers, move your hand.
Light is part of the show, and a graphic will not fix it. A dark card with a pretty thumb is still a dark card. Face a lamp, kill the glare, then talk. Do not cover glare with a sticker. Buyers came for the thing in your hand.
A giveaway can still happen. Say the rule out loud, once, and pin it. You cannot fire a custom giveaway plate from the app. If the room needs sold, giveaway, and a hit to look like three different events, that is three scenes. Those scenes are not a phone feature. States, for when you get there: sold, giveaway, and pull overlays.
The night OBS becomes the job
Stay on the phone while the show is you and the item. Switch when one of these is true. Chat keeps asking which spots are open. Two people need their names on screen, not only in the talk. A hit and a sale are getting the same reaction because nothing on camera marks the difference. You are going live on a repeated format and the thumb is doing work a frame should do.
Do not switch because someone else's board made you feel late. Their board is for their list. Set the canvas and connect before you order files. A kit that arrives before OBS is connected waits in a folder. Where those files go after you are connected: Whatnot OBS setup. The measurement, when you are ready: Whatnot overlay size.
Who should not hire Pelican yet
Do not hire a kit for a casual phone show with no repeated board. We will tell you to fix the thumb and the title. That is a finished audit, not a warm-up for a sale. Hire when you have already decided the next shows need a frame you can run in OBS, and you want those files before the first OBS night, not during the first spot.
We ship files you run in OBS. We do not go live for you. If the answer is 'stay on the phone and change the title,' that is the answer. Service home: Whatnot stream setup.
Run tonight from the phone
- Write the title as product plus format. Delete any word that does not name what is on the table.
- Make one thumb at 1080 x 1920. One product. Your name. No fake board.
- Open the thumb on your phone next to the title. Read both out loud.
- Clear the shot to the item the title names. Check the light before you tap go.
- Replace the pin. Say the exclusion before the first bid.
- After the show, write one line: did chat ask for a list you could not show? That is the OBS signal. A new font is not.
Four phone shows that look ready and are not
The miss is a phone show dressed as a break: a grid on the thumb, teams in the title, and no cells on camera.
| What you shipped | What buyers do | Fix before the next show |
|---|---|---|
| A board drawn on the thumb, no board on camera | They ask which spot is open | Delete the grid from the thumb, or move the show to OBS |
| A hype title and one real item | They stay for a product you are not holding | Name the item. Cut the hype. |
| Yesterday's pin | They quote an exclusion from the other show | Replace the pin when you replace the title |
| A kit you cannot place | Nothing on the live show changes | Do not buy the files until OBS is connected |
Watch the first minute with the sound off. Name the product from the camera. If you cannot, and the thumb shows something else, fix the thumb before you look at overlays.
FAQ
Can I run a Whatnot show from my phone?
Yes, if the show is you and the item. Set a thumb and a title that name that item. Do not promise a board, a hit plate, or a second host on screen. The app will not run those.
Do I need OBS for Whatnot graphics?
You need OBS for a custom frame, a board, and scenes you turn on and off. You do not need it for a thumbnail and a title. Confirm the current connect steps on Whatnot's OBS help before you rebuild a show around a rumor.
Can I put my overlay on the Whatnot app?
Not as a scene you can fire during the show. A picture of an overlay on the thumbnail is not the overlay. If the file has to appear and disappear live, it belongs in OBS.
What size is the thumbnail if I only have a phone?
1080 x 1920. The same vertical size as a live frame. A wide image cropped into the tile loses the product. Check it in a list, not full screen.
Should I hire a board before I switch to OBS?
No. Connect first. A board you cannot put on the show does not make the phone show more honest. Hire when the next night is an OBS night and the list is real.
If the thumb and the table already disagree, fix those before you ask about a kit. Send the show link through Free Audit, or say you are phone-only in Discord. Service home: Whatnot stream setup.
