Animated vs static Whatnot overlays
Use motion on a Whatnot status that changes, and keep the frame behind the card still. A looping border is not a brand.
On this page
Animated vs static Whatnot overlays is a placement decision, not a style preference. Motion belongs on a state that changes: sold, hit, giveaway, BRB. The frame that sits behind the card stays still. If the border loops all night, buyers stop seeing it, and the pull gets harder to read.
This is not a file-format manual, and it is not the safe-area guide. Canvas size lives in Whatnot overlay size. Here: when to move, when to freeze, and when you should not hire motion at all.
| Job tonight | Use | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| Frame, logo, show title | Static PNG on the 1080 x 1920 canvas | A loop that never rests |
| Sold, hit, or giveaway | A short motion hit, then back to still | The same animation as your permanent border |
| Phone-only, no OBS | Static. The app is not a compositor | A motion file you cannot place in layers |
| One thumb for a test show | Canva or any still export | An animated kit you will throw away |
Static is the default, not the cheap option
A static overlay is the plate buyers learn. Same corner for the logo. Same clear hole for the card. Same board cells. They can glance away at chat and come back to a picture that has not shuffled.
Pick static when the show is the product: breaks, singles, a fashion try-on, a toy demo. Skip static only for the two-second state change. A still frame is not a failure of effort. A moving frame that covers the slab is.
Speed is not a defense. A fast loop does not make a cluttered layout readable on a phone.
Motion is a status, then it stops
Use motion when the room needs a new fact: that spot just sold, that hit is the one, the giveaway entry is open, you are on a BRB. Play it once. Land on a still end card the chat can screenshot.
Skip motion when you are about to flip the card. The hands and the slab are already the animation. A lower-third that bounces through the hit is how you hide the thing people paid to see.
We ship show files you run in OBS. A short motion state is usually a Browser Source or a short loop on its own scene, not a border that plays for three hours. Confirm the delivered file type before you build a scene around a guess. Phone-only shows should stay static. The Whatnot app will not layer a custom motion pack the way OBS will.
What to ignore
| Tempting idea | Why it fails on Whatnot |
|---|---|
| Twitch alert stack on every follow | Whatnot already draws chat, bids, and chrome. Extra alerts cover the card. |
| Animated background behind a reflective slab | The card cam needs a calm field or the hit glares and strobes. |
| Different motion language for sold, hit, and giveaway | Buyers cannot tell which event just happened. One motion grammar, three end cards. |
| Hiring animation before the still kit fits 1080 x 1920 | Motion will not fix type that sits under chat. Size the still first. |
Run this on the next show
- Export the live frame as a still PNG at 1080 x 1920. No loop.
- Put sold, hit, and giveaway on separate scenes. Each plays, then holds a still.
- Leave BRB as a still plate with the show name. Motion on a hold screen makes the wait feel longer.
- Go live on a phone-sized preview. If you cannot read the board while a status plays, cut the motion, not the type size.
- If you are still on the Whatnot app with no OBS, do not buy an animated kit. Fix the still thumb and the still frame first. Scene placement: Whatnot OBS setup.
Who should not hire Pelican for motion: sellers testing one casual show from the phone, and anyone who wants a permanent animated border. Who should: rooms that already have a still kit and keep missing sold or hit moments because the screen never changes state.
Watch one loop on a phone before you keep it
Record ten seconds of the live scene with the status playing, then watch it on the phone you actually sell to. Mute it. If you cannot tell sold from hit from giveaway with the sound off, the motion is decoration. Change the end card words, not the speed.
Count how long the card is fully visible. If the loop eats more than a beat of that time, cut the loop. Buyers came for the slab. A status that cannot finish and get out of the way is the wrong status.
Also check the still that remains after the motion ends. A beautiful intro that lands on a blurry or empty frame is an unfinished file. The hold is the graphic. The move is only the door.
One status, timed, then gone
Static is the default. The live frame, the board, and the thumb do not need to move to look finished. Motion is a status: sold, giveaway, or pull. It introduces the state and then stops. If the words are still bouncing when someone tries to screenshot the spot, the file is too long. Count how long the card is fully visible. If the loop eats that time, cut the loop.
A sold flash can be short. The cell on the board is the record. The plate only has to be readable once. A pull hold has to last long enough to read the card name and the spot, then get out. Looping the pull is how a base card and a hit wear the same costume. Give them different plates, or give them no motion and let the board do the work.
If you are still on the Whatnot app with no OBS, do not buy an animated kit. The app will not run it. Fix the still thumb and the still frame first. Motion that cannot be placed is a file in a folder. Who should skip motion entirely: a room that already reads open and claimed without help, and a seller who has not passed a phone test on the still.
| Motion | Keep it when | Cut it when |
|---|---|---|
| A loop under the live frame | Never, as a default | It is on the whole time. That is not a status. |
| Sold flash | The team name is readable, then it leaves | It covers the cell you just marked |
| Pull intro | It lands on a still hold of the card and the spot | The hold is empty, blurry, or still moving |
| The same burst for every event | Never | Chat cannot tell a sale from a hit |
Watch one loop on a phone before you keep the file. The still that remains after the motion ends is the graphic. The move is the door. If you cannot name the spot from the hold, the animation is unfinished no matter how the intro felt on a laptop.
FAQ
Are animated Whatnot overlays better than static ones?
No. Static is the frame. Animation is the status change. A show that animates the frame all night is harder to read than a still kit with one clear sold hit.
Can I use an animated overlay without OBS?
Not as a layered kit. Phone-only lives inside the Whatnot app. Custom scenes, image sources, and browser sources are an OBS job. Connect steps stay on Whatnot Help, not in this post.
Should sold, giveaway, and pull use the same animation?
Same timing and same corner. Different end card. If the motion matches and the word does not, chat will congratulate a giveaway that was actually a sale.
Do I need motion if my board already updates?
Often no. A cell that changes from open to claimed is the update. Add motion only if the room misses that change. More on states: sold, giveaway, and pull overlays.
Where do I put the files?
Still frames as Image Source. Motion states on their own scene so you can hotkey them and get back to the still. Service home: Whatnot overlays.
Send a recent VOD and say which moment you lose (sold, hit, or BRB) through Free Audit, or drop the clip in Discord.
