Custom Whatnot overlay vs Canva templates

Canva is enough for a Whatnot thumb you will throw away. A custom overlay is for the frame and board you run every break.

On this page

Custom Whatnot overlay vs Canva is a scope choice. Canva wins when you need one 1080 x 1920 thumb for a show you might not repeat. A custom kit wins when the same frame, board, and sold state have to survive every break without covering the card. Using Canva as a live broadcast system is how type ends up under chat.

This is not a Canva tutorial, and Pelican does not ship Canva templates. Official product is theirs: Canva. Safe area, which neither a random template nor a moodboard solves by itself: Whatnot overlay size.

Stay in Canva if this is the whole job

You are scheduling one show. You do not have OBS. You need type that says the product, on a vertical canvas, with your logo. Export the PNG. Put it on the show. Stop. That is a finished use of the tool.

Skip Canva for the live board. A flattened team grid cannot change from open to claimed without you re-exporting mid-break, which you will not do. Also skip it when the template was drawn for 16:9. Cropping a YouTube frame into 9:16 is how logos get sliced.

A Canva file is not a scene collection. If the only 'overlay' is a border you screen-record, you are not set up. You are collaging.

Hire the kit when the same files run every night

Pick a custom overlay when you can point at a repeated failure: chat covers the price, the board is a screenshot, sold and giveaway look the same, the thumb and the live room look like different sellers. Those are system problems. Another template will repeat them.

What you should get: still frames at 1080 x 1920, a board matched to the format, starting and BRB plates, and states you can hotkey. What you should not expect: a subscription app that sells the spot when you click it, or a free pack of templates. We do not publish those.

What to ignore

OfferTreat it as
A 'Whatnot overlay' template pack with no safe areaA thumb at best. Check it on a phone with chat up before you trust it.
A Twitch scene dumped into CanvaThe wrong shape. Rebuild vertical or do not use it.
Animation on a Canva still you cannot scene-swapSkip. Motion without OBS scenes is a video you hope lines up.
A custom kit quoted before anyone has seen your showIncomplete. A real kit starts from a VOD, not a logo on a white field.

Decide in one sitting

  1. Write the next four shows. If you cannot, stay in Canva and make one honest thumb.
  2. If you can, watch one VOD on your phone. Circle what chat covers.
  3. If the only miss is the thumb, do not order a kit.
  4. If the board, the frame, and the states all miss, stop iterating in a template. Whatnot overlays.
  5. Motion comes after the still fits. Animated vs static.

A wrong export, specifically

The failure we see most: a 1920 x 1080 Canva frame, cropped in OBS until the logo is a sliver and the card hole is gone. The file looked finished on a laptop because the laptop screen is wide. Whatnot is not. Rebuild at 1080 x 1920 or stop using it as an overlay.

The second failure: five PNG borders named final, final2, and REAL, none of them matched to a scene. A custom kit is allowed to be boring file hygiene. Starting, live, BRB, end. If Canva is producing that set cleanly and the phone test passes, stay there. Hire when the set never passes.

The same frame, built both ways

Stay in Canva when the job is a thumb, or a single still frame you replace yourself, and the phone test passes. Canva is their product. Pelican does not ship Canva templates and does not sell a pack of them. A still PNG at 1080 x 1920, placed as an Image Source, is a finished overlay if the card hole survives chat. You do not need a studio for that.

Hire the kit when the same files have to run every night and Canva keeps producing a wide file, a cropped hole, or a pile of borders that do not match a scene. The failure we see most is 1920 x 1080, cropped in OBS until the logo is a sliver. The laptop screen is wide. Whatnot is not. Cropping is not a conversion. Rebuild at 1080 x 1920, or keep Canva for the thumb and admit the live scene is unsolved.

Motion comes after the still fits. A Browser Source you cannot get back from is not an argument for a custom kit yet. It is an argument for learning one scene. Who should not hire: a seller who goes live twice a month, from the phone, with no repeated board. Who should: the frame, the board, and the states are the same job every week and the current files never pass the phone test.

JobCanva is enoughA kit is the job
One thumbYes, if it reads at tile sizeNo
A still frame at 1080 x 1920Yes, if the hole survives chatOnly if you cannot keep the file honest
A board you update every spotRarely. The file goes stale in one fill.Yes, if the states have to be obvious
Sold, giveaway, and pull as different platesOnly if you already run OBS scenes cleanlyYes, when one burst is doing all three jobs

Decide in one sitting. Open the current file on a phone with chat visible. If it passes, stop shopping. If it fails, write down the failure in one sentence: wrong size, missing list, or states that look the same. That sentence is the brief. A moodboard of other sellers is not. Send the show links when you want the kit. Do not send a password, and do not expect a template pack.

FAQ

Is Canva good enough for a Whatnot overlay?

For a thumb or a simple starting still, yes. For a break board and a live frame that has to clear Whatnot's own UI every night, no.

Can I design the whole show in Canva and send it to OBS?

You can export stills and load them as images. You still have to build the scenes, the card hole, and a way to change claim state. The editor will not do that part.

Do you sell Canva templates?

No. We do not publish template packs. Free Audit looks at your show. The work product is files for your kit, not a public download.

When is a custom overlay a waste of money?

When you do not have OBS, when you have not repeated a format, or when the only problem is a single thumbnail. Buy the smaller tool.

What should I send if I want a kit instead?

Two or three show links, the format, and the logo. The field list is what to send when you hire Whatnot graphics.

A wide Canva file that you crop in OBS is the failure mode to stop repeating. Rebuild the frame at 1080 x 1920, or keep Canva for the thumb only and admit the live scene is still unsolved. Cropping is not a conversion. It is how the card hole disappears. Measure the result on a phone with chat visible, not only in the editor preview. Do that before you pay anyone to redraw it.

If the thumb is the only hole, make it today. If the live room is the hole, send a VOD through Free Audit or Discord.
